First of all, I am a big supporter of the U.S. Postal service
great service, hard working clerks and almost never any delivery
problems. Ebay's tentative policy, effective October 1, 2008 calls for
Paypal only, that is no money order (postal or store), checks including
(bank or credit union issued cashiers checks), or other types of online
payments (BidPay), nor cash (registered mail). However, what ebay is not
informing sellers and read this very carefully, "IT IS UP TO THE
DISCRETION OF THE SELLER to accept money orders, checks, cash or various
other payment forms that have worked for both the seller or the buyer."
Some sellers are being swindled by putting in their listings the
disclaimer "effective October 1, 2008 ebay calls for Paypal only" this
is not true nor binding. The seller cannot explicitly state in their
listings that they "accept money orders, checks and cash." However the
seller can state something to the effect of "I will accept other forms
of payment at my discretion", or "please email me first for payment
terms","alternative payments will be considered" and so forth.
The point even though ebay allows seller discretion -- don't be dupped
into signing up for a Paypal account. Why?
First sellers and especially buyers should not be forced into Paypal. I
am not a fan of Paypal because when you sign up you give Paypal by proxy
the power to freeze and conduct transactions with your primary bank
account -- this is extremely dangerous There are also serious privacy
issues giving ebay clandestine power to sell your listing information
and buying habits to data mining operatives (think cookies, their new
format) and data clearinghouses. The horror stories
are abound with the small potatoes seller conducting business unbeknowst
to the no fees options of accepting alternative payment forms only to
have their bank accounts frozen as a result of a malicious transaction.
Sellers and buyers can mitigate this proxy factor by
1.) Creating a separate bank account exclusively for Paypal or internet
payment transactions.
2.) Close your current Paypal account after all transactions have been
completed then -- create a separate bank account exclusively for Paypal
or internet transactions.
3.) Banks and Credit Unions need to implement an internet transaction
plan that is separate from the primary bank account (check and debit)
but allows the holder of account to transfer funds - to a created
"suffixed" account (linked perhaps to a credit card). Simply put, create
a separate suffix exclusively for Paypal or other online payment
transactions exclusively not linked to the primary bank account, hence
preventing Paypal from freezing a ebay users primary bank account.
This is the only logical solution..
Despite the change it is my money and my preference are the products of
the U.S. Postal Service, domestic and international money orders (which
can be traced), Postal insurance and delivery confirmation. Finally,
postal clerks should casually protect the interests of the U.S. Postal
service by informing their astute ebay customers of "ebay's
discretionary" policy. Ebay is seriously slitting its wrists (like
Amazon's new policy) by implementing a Paypal only policy.
