http://help.comcast.net/content/faq/Does_Comcast_offer_a_newsgroups_service
Since I've been a Comcast subscriber, Comcast offered Usenet outsourced
to Giganews. This was discontinued effective September 16th, although
it won't be discontinued for existing users until October 25.
If you're a Comcast subscriber, please complain. I called customer
retention (the sales group you get when you call their customer service
number asking to disconnect service) and told them that Usenet was worth
$5 a month to me and they gave me a credit for each of the next 12
months. It's unlikely to change anything but it's more likely they'll
notice if a customer requests a credit.
For binary Usenet, http://giganews.com/ or another premium service
For text Usenet only, http://individual.net/ is the best there is.
Also http://aioe.org/ http://www.motzarella.org/
There are alternatives. Don't use Google Groups. Don't lose access to
the most important newsgroup on Usenet.

First of all, I am a big supporter of the U.S. Postal service
great service, hard working clerks and almost never any delivery
problems. Ebay's tentative policy, effective October 1, 2008 calls for
Paypal only, that is no money order (postal or store), checks including
(bank or credit union issued cashiers checks), or other types of online
payments (BidPay), nor cash (registered mail). However, what ebay is not
informing sellers and read this very carefully, "IT IS UP TO THE
DISCRETION OF THE SELLER to accept money orders, checks, cash or various
other payment forms that have worked for both the seller or the buyer."
Some sellers are being swindled by putting in their listings the
disclaimer "effective October 1, 2008 ebay calls for Paypal only" this
is not true nor binding. The seller cannot explicitly state in their
listings that they "accept money orders, checks and cash." However the
seller can state something to the effect of "I will accept other forms
of payment at my discretion", or "please email me first for payment
terms","alternative payments will be considered" and so forth.
The point even though ebay allows seller discretion -- don't be dupped
into signing up for a Paypal account. Why?

Got back from a nice visit with TW down S. Jersey way. Gave my new
car a workout and got my usual mental workout dealing with TW.
Needless to say, the car fared better than my brain. Those who keep in
touch with her might ask about how less her laptop is running hot now
that she learned that those cooling fans you can place under the
laptop work much better when the device is switched on. 8-)

"The Barefoot Mailman" starred Robert Cummings as the title character, a
scoundrel with a contract mail route in the jungle wilds of south
Florida in the 1890s, when the famous cities of today were merely
outposts on the beach of jungles. In the opening scene, the mailman is
walking along the beach when he spots a gang of men intent on robbing
the mails. He jumps into a swamp only to encounter an alligator, which
he manages to outrun after the bandits leave.
You thought dogs were a problem!
Long, you still boycotting the newsgroup or did you find yourself a real
News server?

We are compiling anonymous letters for a book we intend to publish
which borrows solely the post script "P.S." of letters. By responding
to this post, you agree to have us publish your letter, but don't be
scared!
Please send us emails, scanned letters, photos with a letter, etc, but
do make sure to include the letter in its entirety [though we will
only use the postscript section] and do make sure they are letters
which actually include a p.s.! [duh]
oh, and most importantly-don't think we discriminate against people of
other nationalities. we don't. just because we can't understand it,
doesn't mean someone else can't-or that we don't want to learn! so
please send letters in any language...
Do this, and we promise to be your friends. And let us tell you, we're
worth it! Thank you.
please send your posts to us in all our loveliness @

I presume this means I go silent on the 24th. The epidemic continues:
As a Verizon Newsgroup service user, we wanted to let you know about some
important changes that we will soon be making to our Newsgroup service.
On June 24, 2008, we will be modifying our Newsgroup offerings to only offer
groups in the Big-8 Newsgroup hierarchies, which are listed below. The
0.verizon.* newsgroup hierarchy will also continue to be available. Users
will not be able to post or download from any other newsgroups using our
Newsgroup service.

We all know the cost to mail a letter just went up by one cent, but
did you all know that at the same time, the cost of Priority mail as
much as nearly doubled?
I just mailed two identical packages via Priority mail - one going to
an address here in NYC, and one to Seattle. The NYC one cost $4.80,
and the Seattle one cost $8.25! Holy cow. Also, the receipt said NYC
was Zone 0, and Seattle is Zone 8.
So they've added some damned zoning system and increased the cost
depending on how far it's going. That's a major change from how they
used to do it, where it was the same cost no matter how far it was
going. If they had lowered the cost somewhat for packages that were
travelling a shorter distance it would be easier to swallow., but of
course they wouldn't do that. As usual, it's just a way to increase
revenue as much as possible, not more accurately reflect actual costs.
