Hello all, been reading through the posts for a bit now and thought
I'd join and say hello. Having bought my first pipe this week I also
have a lot of questions, so here I am!
For me, and undoubtedly many others, pipe smoking's something I
remember from time spent with my grandpa but it's only over the last
year or so that I've actually thought I could maybe give it a go
myself. So, been reading the posts here and elsewhere and ordered in
a fairly budget pipe and some aromatic tobacco, took my time packing
it and lit up for the first time a few days back...
As soon as I tried the 'false light' I started feeling sick but
persevered, re-tamped and got it lit. Managed a few puffs, but
sickness took over and I was really unwell for the rest of the the
day. Nearly threw it all in the bin, but ended up buying a new tobacco
(bought one that called itself 'mild') and gave it another bash
tonight. Same result.

damn boy, why would you even start???!!!! If something makes ya sick then
take a lesson from that. I am addicted to tobacco and have come to a
understanding in that I will enjoy thoroughly this thing that will kill me.
But, if I had my time back would never gotten hooked in the first place !!
(I say this while drinking bourbon from the bottle and smoking some sail
green in a GBD billiard)

Too much nicotine *can* induce nausea, but it normally takes quite a
while to absorb enough nicotine from pipe smoking to cause that sort
of condition. Even the strongest pipe tobaccos shouldn't induce a
feeling of illness that lasts for a whole day after just a few puffs,
and since your reaction is immediate, right from the very first light,
something other than nicotine may be causing the problem.
Firstly: Do you suffer from allergic reactions generally? This sounds
like something of that nature.

I have no advice for you, but since you have started to post, our little
group has become more complete. We have needed a Jack on this group.

Welcome to the fellowship of the pipe, Jack.
I might suggest a Virginia based aromatic to start. I may be wrong,
but I think most aromatics are burley based and I think burley has
more nicotine than Virginia based blends. Pay attention to the advice
you have received so far, especially about inhaling. Also, many of us
smoke too fast at first. Might want to try to smoke slowly, more
sipping the pipe.
Well, I hope you are able to enjoy pipe smoking. Keep posting and let
us know how you are progressing. Cheers,
