Well, if one were to be bluntly candid-which I am not entirely sure is
advisable-one could admit to having had lustful & passionate thought
about several women of the silent screen. Thirty-five seems to me a
most attractive age. London society is full of women of the very
highest birth who have of their own free will remained thirty-five for
years. Lady Dumpleton is an instance in point. From my own knowledge
she has remained thirty-five ever since arriving at the age of
forty-which is many years ago now. To be born-or at least bred-in a
handbag, whether it had handles or not seems to me to display a
contempt for the basic decencies of family life that reminds one of the
worst excesses of the French Revolution. And I presume you know what
THAT unfortunate movement led to!

Oh yes, "stroking-off to the silent queens"...I would mention Jean
Arthur(who started in silents), whose distinctive voice had me so vexed
that every part about me quivered. In my teens & twenties I had always
thought her incredibly sexy & delectable. Her last film was
"Shane"-boy, was Van Heflin ever lucky in THAT picture! Of course, when
she died in 1991, well into her nineties, there were hints of her
possessing a lesbianic attitude, which caused some 'wilting' of the
dream. But oh well, nobody's perfect. Another delicious presence of the
silent screen to me was Jobyna Ralston, whom I understand Harold Lloyd
developed a carnal knowledge of during the many pictures they did
together in the 1920s. Alas, Lillian Gish never affected me in quite
the same way-too pure & virginal by far. Had she only flung up her
crinolines & thrust her torso forward a few times whilst doing the
"Toddle-O" a la Blossom Seeley, I perhaps might have had a change of
heart. Well, I'm off to be baptised, and so must leave. Miss Prism
approaches.
