I got close one time, but no dice. Summer '92 RFK Stadium, DC. My
buddy was skiing buddies with the dude that did the sound for the
Steve Miller Band, and that summer tour Steve Miller opened for the
Dead. My friend and I had backstage passes, but only for common areas
and the Steve Miller Band area, ya would have needed better
credentials to get into the private GD area. I did get to briefly meet
and shake hands with Bob Weir that day, got to thank him for all the
years of great music and all the fun he and the boys provided. He said
he appreciated the words and pointed me towards the drinks before he
wandered off. A little while later, Jerry just walked right by me. The
opportunity just wasn't there to approach him. But I kinda smelled him
a little bit as he walked by. ;-)

Ironically he died in a rehab trying to get off the heroin and coke.
He was doing better but one morning he just didn't wake up and that
was that.
I'm more used to the Tiger model and the Rosebud model. That's from
my era. But I know about the Travis Beam.
J, the way you talk about guitars it reminds me a little bit of the
scene from Spinal Tap where Marty DeBergy (Rob Reiner) is interviewing
Nigel about his guitar collection (the scene where Nigel tells Marty
that "this amp goes to 11") . . . Marty points at one of Nigel's
guitars and reaches out to touch it and Nigel tells him, don't touch
it and Marty comes back with No? ok, I'll just get a closer look at
it, and Nigel growing very anxious tells him, no don't don't even look
at that one . . . HA! Remember when Nigel pickedup a different guitar
and asks Marty, "Can you hear that?" (nothing is audible) Marty says
no and Nigel says, the sustain, listen to that sustain, I mean you can
almost hear it.
