Elections are due to take place in Bangladesh on 29
December
Seven suspected militants with ties to a banned Islamic
group in Bangladesh have been arrested with a large cache
of explosives, police have said.
The raids come ahead of national elections due to take
place on Monday to restore democracy to the country.
It was unclear if the explosives were to be used against
polls, police said.
The election was initially scheduled for 18 December but
was postponed after one of the country's two main parties
said that it needed more time.

United States backs Indian proof of Pakistani hand
The Times of India
Wednesday, December 24, 2008
Indraprasth aka New Delhi - The US has endorsed the
evidence gathered by Indian agencies about the complicity
of Pakistan's state actors in the terrorist attack on
Mumbai, in what can result in stepped up international
pressure on the Zardari regime to take action against the
mentors of Lashkar-e-Taiba. Top US intelligence official
John Michel McConell is learnt to have expressed complete
satisfaction with the strength of India's case against
Pakistan, based on FBI's examination of call records of
satellite and cellular phones used by Mumbai attackers and
their Pakistan-based handlers. McConell confirmed that one
of the numbers logged on the satellite phone...

The US all this while had only paid lip service to India's
pain in being at the receiving end of Islamic terrorism,
but attack on Jews in Mumbai ensured that the US and
western Europe demonstrably came on India's side.

Terror Debate: FROM THE FRONT PAGE
Reluctant UPA has taken "half a step" on terror -- Arun Jaitley

Arun Jaitley on the National Investigative Agency Bill,
2008 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Bill, 2008.
As the tenure of the UPA Government comes to an end it has
brought the National Investigative Agency Bill, 2008 not
out of any ideological conviction but because the 10 evil
men who shook India on 26/11 have convinced every Indian
that the battle against terrorism cannot be curtailed
because of vote bank considerations.
Those who opposed a strong special law against terrorism
have been conclusively proved wrong. Their logic was the
following:-
o That POTA was a law not against terrorism but against
minorities.

Let's resolve to fight terror unitedly

Some of the same people who later opposed POTA were also
opposed to TADA, and for the same reasons namely, that it
is draconian. After the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai,
when TADA was invoked, TADA was also called "anti-
minorities". I am saying all this just to drive home the
point that what kind of laws we need to protect the nation
and its people from the scourge of terrorism.
The internal security apparatus must be free and
sufficiently empowered to deal with any threat that seeks
to weaken India. And as representatives of the People of
India, it is our bounden duty to enact laws whose power is
commensurate to the grave threat posed by international
terrorism.

Is Congress serious?
Terror talk easier than fighting terror
Editorial

Obliquely the UPA has admitted that terror talk could be
politically rewarding, especially when it is time for
general elections. Only on politically expedient terms can
the UPA's latest tough talk on terror be explained. For, it
was soft-pedalling for too long. Is it really sincere?

Britain warns Pakistan
Agencies
DNA
Thursday, December 25, 2008
London - Britain has warned Pakistan after the Mumbai
terror attacks that India was losing patience and the
United Kingdom like the US was worried that lack of
cooperation from Islamabad could provoke some unwanted
developments.
The British warning was delivered right on the heels of
alert delivered personally by chairman of the US joint
chiefs of staff admiral Mike Mullen, Dawn reported.
Expressing appreciation of the difficulties facing
Pakistan, Britain is said to have made known its no-
confidence in the middle-ranking officials of the ISI as it
feared that these officers were not carrying out orders
from the political leadership faithfully.
Britain has also asked about any mechanism in place in
Pakistan to know what the ISI is doing and to influence it.
