1 - hydrogen fuel cells are bogeymen of the carbon industry
chemical uses of hydrogen for energy storage
derive the energy from secondary source
(coal, ...)
hydrogen is not an energy _source_ unless used in fusion
and will not assist in energy independence in any way
instead only creating a secondary market on methane
and maintaining an inefficient mass-transport system
it is much better to push light little electrons around
(electric delivery to vehicles)
than it is to ship heavy protons around
particularly with current leakage rates
(even better would be photonic delivery of power)
2 - yes
there is much innovation in america
educational institutes in america lead the world in innovation
and the top research corporations
(bell, intel, ..)
still outperform all major competitors
america's rich and diverse culture
has always promoted an environment of great ingenuity
3 - my pick for the next great invention within five years:
silicon nanowire batteries
10 times the charge density
= electric cars with usable charge-ranges
