German rockers the Scorpions are in deep water following criticism of
one of their album covers. The cover in question accompanied a record
that was released more than 30 years ago! In case you haven't guessed by
now, we're talking about the cover to Virgin Killer, which depicts a
naked pre-pubescent girl in a provocative pose. Her chest is completely
exposed and a small crack is placed over her vagina. The cover is being
used on the online encyclopedia Wikipdia to illustrate an entry about
the Scorps' Virgin Killer album. The Virgin Killer cover was banned in
the United States due to its controversial nature and was later replaced
with a photo of the band.
The FBI is now reviewing the Wikipedia photo of the nude adolescent,
believing that it could violate federal child-pornography laws.
"Although it's an old album cover, it is done in very poor taste," said
Matt Barber, a US law attorney. "By allowing that image to remain
posted, Wikipedia is helping to further facilitate perversion and
paedophilia." A Wikipedia spokesman responded: "Our goal is to provide
an encyclopedia that contains the sum of all human knowledge. To that
end, Wikipedia does not censor objectionable material."
