Texas polygamy sect

Author: Mike Sullivan

Interesting that when I read about this sick group, I assumed they were a
fundie Mormon sect,
that claimed to be followers of JS and BY.

The news articles I've read in the mainstream newspapers don't mention
Mormons
at all.

Did I assume wrong, or is the news editor avoiding using the Mormon label
for the group?

Which group, specifically, are you talking about?

The group where a 16 yr old girl called authorities, I read articles
earlier this
week, this was today's SF chronicle:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2008/04/09/MN9B102556.DTL

Neither had mentioned being a mormon sect and thought maybe
I jumped to conclusions on my assumption.

But after I posted question to ARM, I googled it and see this was
Warren Jeffs who I believe is the Colorado City Az,
fundie LDS group.

It may have just been the article you read. I think the papers here in
Texas have "mormon" attached to the group. I think they label them
"fundamentalist mormons" which is kind of funny.

They are a break away sect from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints. They broke away around 100 years ago when the LDS Church
discontinued the practice of polygamy.

Yes, I missed the connection to Warren Jeffs initially.

I took a family vacation years back, the typical N. Arizona, S. Utah parks,
Grand Canyon, Zion, Walnut Canyon, etc. etc....

This region, however, offers a great deal more than beautiful
hiking and other beautiful sights. We stopped in the odd
and out of the way places like Colorado City ("where polygamists
roam the streets!" was my tagline), Sedona ("the home of
tin foil and pyramid hats"), Rachel, NV ("gateway to Area 51
and Kook Central") and Baker NV ("miles of roadside sculptures")

A good time was had by all. When we got a quick bite
in Colo City, a group of kids stared at us. I thought they
looked like the cast of "Children of the Corn".

They believe in the Book of Mormon, and honor Joseph Smith Jun., as
their founding prophet. They are as mormon as any mormon group.

They are then mormons who have nothing to do with Mitt Romney and Tom
Monson. Fair enough? ...
