A laser is a device that emits light (electromagnetic radiation)
through a process called stimulated emission. The term "laser" is an
acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of
Radiation.Laser light is usually spatially coherent, which means that
the light either is emitted in a narrow, low-divergence beam, or can
be converted into one with the help of optical components such as
lenses. Typically, lasers are thought of as emitting light with a
narrow wavelength spectrum ("monochromatic" light).

James, when do you think your questions embarrass us? I suggest some of them
really should embarrass you.

  MERRY CHRISTMAS!

CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS!

Reason #1: Celebrate the prophet's pronouncements of the birth of
Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold,
the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name
Immanuel.

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And
the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace.

Reason #2: Celebrate the fulfillment of prophecy concerning the birth
of Jesus Christ.

Micah 5:2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among
the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One
to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from
everlasting."

Bridging a Jewish-Mormon rift
Grandpa's baptism opens door
By Manya A. Brachear
Chicago Tribune
September 21, 2008

Grandpa's arms always offered the warmest embrace. But he had an iron
fist when it came to being Jewish.

Having watched his parents shun his brother Al for marrying a non-Jew,
Grandpa didn't marry my Christian grandmother until she had converted
to Judaism. Later, my grandfather insisted that a rabbi marry my mom
and dad. And he boycotted his sons' weddings when they both married
Catholics.

So imagine the shock when I learned that my late grandfather had been
posthumously baptized a Mormon.
The news revealed nothing about my grandfather. After all, the baptism
wasn't his idea. Instead, it opened my eyes to the role of free will
in the belief system of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, commonly called the Mormon Church.

Extermination Order not believed to be a 'death sentence'
By Heather M. Seferovich
BYU Studies
Published: Tuesday, Sep. 16, 2008

Beginning in August 1838, hostilities erupted into armed aggression
between Mormons and Missourians, resulting in what has been termed the
Mormon War.

Vigilante groups, county regulators and state militia attempted to
forcibly remove or expel Mormons. The conflict concluded in November
1838 when Mormon militia leaders surrendered to state military
officers and church leaders submitted to authorities for trial in
connection with the disturbances.

The Mormon-Missouri conflict of 1838 consisted of seven military
episodes or campaigns. Brigham Young University associate professor of
church history and doctrine Alexander L. Baugh's study examines each
of these and provides alternative explanations to the problems and
issues associated with recent interpretations of the conflict. Baugh
is also the author of a book that covers the topic, "A Call to Arms:
The 1838 Mormon Defense of Northern Missouri."

George Putnam, RIP

Monday, September 15, 2008 10:27 AM

By: Lowell Ponte

George Putnam, a Newsmax columnist and a newscaster well known and
loved by baby boomers who grew up in or around Los Angeles during the
1950s and 60s, died Friday. He was 94.

Many boomer Angelenos saw him as a bit of a caricature. Actor Ted
Knight’s stentorian anchorman character on the "Mary Tyler Moore" show
was modeled in part on Putnam.

George’s signature salute at the end of his early L.A. newscasts was a
geographically changing patriotic affirmation spoken with firm
enthusiasm over that day’s image of Old Glory: “The American flag
flies proudly over the Azusa City Hall.”

During the 1960s, George Putnam to many youngsters seemed old-
fashioned, right-wing, and corny. But George Putnam’s heart and spirit
matched his words. He was a genuine patriot, and a much more noble
soul than those who criticized or ridiculed him knew.

  MORE BLOOD ON BRIGHAM YOUNG

A hellish trek
Cambridge author David Roberts, an expert on mountaineering and the
American West, explores a little-known wilderness disaster in his new
book, "Devil's Gate: Brigham Young and the Great Mormon Handcart
Tragedy" (Simon & Schuster).

In 1856, about 1,800 Mormons set out from Iowa, pushing their
belongings in rickety handcarts on a 1,300-mile journey to Salt Lake
City. As with the Donner party bound for California 10 years earlier,
starvation and exposure claimed the lives of many. About 220 Mormons
died along the way.

Roberts blames Young, leader of the Mormon church, for the deaths. The
author argues that Young knew the food supplies were inadequate and
the late starting date for the journey would make it impossible to
avoid winter storms. Another failure of Young's judgment, he writes,
was the reliance on handcarts instead of covered wagons. As part of
his research, Roberts pushed a replica handcart loaded with 60 pounds
of cargo along a trail. After 3 miles, he was exhausted.

Mormon MP adds Utah stop to bill
Darrell Giles
September 14, 2008 12:00am

A STATE Opposition MP has billed taxpayers for a US trip to visit
fellow members of the Mormon church.
David Gibson, the Liberal National Party Member for Gympie, claimed a
$305 daily allowance during his week in Utah in June.

Mr Gibson, a devout Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints) who is the Opposition's climate change spokesman, justified
the trip as a study tour because he visited Utah State University's
sustainable building and irrigation engineering program.

He also billed taxpayers for attending The Art of Political
Campaigning conference in Washington, where one of the sessions taught
delegates how to dig the dirt on rival politicians.

Mr Gibson said the three-day Washington conference was relevant
because he was the Opposition campaign spokesman.

One of the presentations was called "Dumpster Diving: How to find and
use opposition research".

Here's some funny webpages. There used to be an article
in Wikipedia about "Sollog" but apparently the problems
associated with this page were only surmountable by Wiki
putting in code that permanently abolishes the article.

Somebody's written some funny stuff here:
http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Sollog

The wiki talk pages archive still exists:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sollog/fullarchive

Usenet of course doesn't have censor code exactly:

And the names of Solong's 17 hurricanes were:

Marco, Nana, Omar, Paloma, Isabel, Juan, Rose, Alex,
Danielle, Nicole, Dennis, Lee, Helene, Michael, William,
Gabrielle, Michelle.

There's no reason to suppose that Solonq got these names by
revelation; hurricanes in the North Atlantic are named from
a published list. They use six lists, in rotation; every
year they start naming big storms in the north Atlantic
with the names in order from the current list.

If a hurricane causes a lot of damage they retire the name,
which Solong might not have been aware of, read on.

Marco, Nana, Omar and Paloma were on the 2002 list but
weren't used, there weren't that many named storms. That
list is being used again in the current year 2008. We
haven't gotten to those names yet.
