The lore says Woody was based on a bird that disturbed Lantz's honeymoon
on Sherwood Lake, California. If that means Lake Sherwood in L.A.
County, neither one would have been found there, right? Woody's original
coloring suggests maybe a red-breasted sapsucker, though the recording I
found of its laugh is even squawkier than the red-head's.
