a big fire

Wednesday a tanker truck overturned on Interstate 55 at the northbound
Lemont Road exit. Dawne and I were on our way back from court when I
noticed all of this smoke coming from what turned out to be ten miles
to the west of us, so since I am a guy (Dawne said she thought it must
be a "guy thing", we had to go and check it out. Good thing we didn't
take the Interstate itself, which turned out to be a parking lot for
miles in either direction. Instead, we took a frontage road that I
knew would take us right past the site (by then news of the fire was
on the radio).

We pulled up to the site and there were all these guys (yes, mainly
dudes) pulled over standing on their cars trying to get photos with
their cameras. I was surprised the Authorities let us get as close as
they did to this fire. It was truly amazing. Now I know what an oil
well fire must look like (though probably on a smaller scale). The
gas the truck was carrying must have soaked into the ground, and
caused a brushfire, cause it took a few hours to strike the fire.
Fortunately we were downwind from this wreck.

The last I heard, the poor driver was in hospital with third degree
burns. Damn.

This is the kind of situation in which our safety officer friend's "rule
of thumb" applies: Hold up your thumb at arm's length. Can you see the
truck? You're too close.

¬R And all throughout the land there was the sound of stirring macaroni

So the firemen are allowed to beat you with sticks.

Oh, hey, I just noticed my sig disappeared. Another consequence of the
Great Hard Drive Crash of '07.

Someone send me a new one.
