San Sheng asked Hsueh Feng, "I wonder, what does the golden fish who
has passed through the net use for food?"
Feng said, "When you coume out of the net I'll tell you."
Sheng said , "The teacher of fifteen-hundred people and you don't even
know what to say!"
Feng said, "My affairs as abbot are many and complicated."
My Comments;
Most popluar koans show us a teacher and a student, there is greater
understanding and a lessor understanding. This one is different in
that both of these gentlemen are Zen adepts. There is literally no
teacher and no student here, just two Chan masters shining bright.
My Comments by line;
- San Sheng asked Hsueh Feng, "I wonder, what does the golden fish who
has passed through the net use for food?"
The hook is baited, take the bait and lose your life, leave the bait
and starve to death. You either get it or you don't, there's no room
for error here.
- Feng said, "When you coume out of the net I'll tell you."
Unfazed a golden fish easily breaks the line and swallows the bait.
