I dedicate this thread to my friend Hone [John}.

years ago he wrote "No Ordinary Sun" about the nuclear holocaust.

what was important to me was that he saw the devastation himself at
Hiroshima

he got on well with my dad who was also in J-force in 1946-47

i am going to try and paste my tribute to him over one of his last
poems
"Aloof...".... a play on the words 'a roof"

in writing up the poem i referred to Hone as "No Ordinary Son"

none of us, sons or daughters are very ordinary...

especially what we have bin through...

NO ORDINARY SON

This week New Zealand's most senior poet died.
Hone Tuwhare was the first among many Maori
writers to excell in producing work written in
English.

(if you rare eally keen and actually reading this
and want a hand with some of the Maori terminology
I would be only too happy to help you. [Kiwi style.])

[please read all the way through before responding, and keep in mind
that it's badly written cuz I really do feel horrid at the moment.]

I fell on the sidewalk yesterday when walking home from the clinic where
I'd had blood drawn. I fell slow but still my body hurts, and my right
shoulder is so sore that I have trouble raising my arm, the heel of my
right hand is badly bruised, muscles in my legs are sore and stiff, I
have a headache and I feel horrible.

I was being careful and I had resolved not to fall anymore despite the
fact that I get dizzy at times. I was walking slowly but I am so mad at
myself for falling when I had resolved to not fall anymore and I didn't
fall over the curb, I fell because there was a paving stone a bit out of
whack and I didn't see the edge of it sticking up and didn't feel the
unevenness of it as I went over it.

Jesus I lost it Last Night.

An example of when triangulation is necessary in order to avoid
strangulation!

I will try to keep this brief.

This weekend I have a dear friend's 40th birthday party to go to. It
will be a fun weekend away, catching up with old friends and their
children. When I realised it fell on a weekend when my boy would be
with his Dad, I phoned his Dad and requested that we swap weekends.
He said that was fine, in fact he was quite happy for me to have him
because he is moving house that weekend and doesn't want the stress of
looking after him while trying to move.

So, last night I get a phone call from my son telling me he has made a
decision and wants to stay with Dad for the weekend. Dad gets on the
phone and says that he told me that it would be our boy's decision
when we originally discussed it. This is an out-and-out lie. At no
point did he ever say he would let our boy make the decision. I saw
red! I lost my power. I swore. I swore some more. I hung up.

I'm just sayin' . . . .

So, I thought I had a handle on this, and I was proud of myself for
working through it and getting everything under control.

Then we find a house that we quite like. My blood pressure shoots up, I
have trouble sleeping and lo, I once again begin to eat to manage my
stress.

I am ashamed. I thought I'd licked this months ago. Of course, putting
in an offer on a home (which the bank, who owns the house, will take a
good two weeks to reply to) is some significant stress, but still.

I feel like I ought to have been able to see this coming and been a
little bit more proactive instead of letting it happen all over again.

However, now that I know that I am once again eating poorly due to
stress, I can fight against that. It might be cold comfort, but it's
comfort nevertheless.

Did I mention that my MiL, in all innocence, gave me a big tin of
chocolate fondue chips as a thankyou for watching her little dog over
the weekend last week?
