My Grandfather died, quite suddenly, while doing the post-lunch washing
up. He keeled over, Nonna ran to him and had time to ask him if he was
in pain. He said no, and expired. Wearing brand new socks, even. We
should all be so lucky as to die so well - he had just returned to Rome
the day before after having been honored for his life's work of
protecting Antarctica at a ceremony in Spain, he'd kissed his daughter
and grand-daughter goodbye that morning (we lived in the USA at the time
so we did not see him that often), had a nice lunch, and died very fast
with no pain, and no illness leading up to it: he'd been the image of
good health up until that very moment. It was a stunning shock to those
who were left behind, but for him it was as good an ending as anyone
could hope for....
