Military Makes Mincemeat of Church-State Separation

Maybe the reason the misperception persists that there are no atheists
in foxholes is that nonbelievers must either shut up about their views
or be hounded out of the military.

Just ask Army Spc. Jeremy Hall, who is making a splash in the news
because of the way his atheism was attacked by superiors and fellow
soldiers while he was risking his life in service to his country.

Hall, 23, served two combat tours in Iraq, winning the Combat Action
Badge. But he’s now stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., having been
returned stateside early because the Army couldn’t ensure his safety.

There is something deeply amiss when we send soldiers on a mission to
engender peaceful coexistence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims, yet
our military doesn’t seem able to offer religious tolerance to its
own.

The Last War and the Next One
Descending into Madness in Iraq — and Beyond

The last war won’t end, but in the Pentagon they’re already arguing
about the next one.

Let’s start with that “last war” and see if we can get things
straight. Just over five years ago, American troops entered Baghdad in
battle mode, felling the Sunni-dominated government of dictator Saddam
Hussein and declaring Iraq “liberated.” In the wake of the city’s
fall, after widespread looting, the new American administrators
dismantled the remains of Saddam’s government in its hollowed out,
trashed ministries; disassembled the Sunni-dominated Baathist Party
which had ruled Iraq since the 1960s, sending its members home with
news that there was no coming back; dismantled Saddam’s 400,000 man
army; and began to denationalize the economy. Soon, an insurgency of
outraged Sunnis was raging against the American occupation.

Faith-Based Missile Defense

In an oversight hearing on the US missile defense program last month,
Philip Coyle III, a former Assistant Secretary of Defense and Director
of Operational Test and Evaluation in the Department of Defense from
1994-2001, spoke to the House Subcommittee on National Security and
Foreign Affairs about the almost impossible position it’s in when it
comes to oversight of this $150 billion - and counting - weapons
program: “Congress does not have the information it needs to do
oversight. If you don’t have the information, and the Pentagon just
says ‘trust me’, you can’t really do oversight.”

Over and over, the American people have risen up to pressure Congress

virtually everyone has a story about how the long absences have
affected those back home.

The young wives who decide the lifestyle is too hard and pen "Dear

The families that begin to unravel when a soldier comes home mentally
or physically damaged from more than a year in combat.

The chaplains who work round-the-clock to staff new family
intervention programs: for war-strained marriages, for suicide
prevention, for kids missing their parents.

"The human psyche can only take so much," said Capt. Jeff Van Ness, a
chaplain who returned from duty in Iraq just two weeks ago. "And a 15-
month deployment seems to be where we really began to see some
breaking points." "
