I have an elderly uncle who likes to tell the story of having a yearly
utility bill of 25 cents, back in the late 1920s. 25 cents bought 3 gallons
of kerosene, and everything else was obtained from chopped wood.
Transportation was on foot or horse powered.
Yeah, you can get along without gasoline, but some people would think that
life sucks without it.
