Today, Democrat Travis Childers beat Republican Greg Davis in a
special election in Mississippi's 1st Congressional District. The
margin of victory was *8* percentage points.
To put this in perspective, the GOP has now lost three straight
Republican districts to the Democrats in special elections this year -
Dennis Hastert's district in Illinois, Louisiana's 6th Congressional
District, and now Mississippi 1st. These are all districts that were
held by the GOP for years; decades even. And Bush got 62%% of the vote
in Mississippi's 1st in 2004.
I don't know enough to make a firm prediction about the presidential
race, but I can tell you that the GOP is in for a whomping in the
congressional races this year.
