120 US war veteran suicides a week
Article from: Agence France-Presse

From correspondents in New York

November 15, 2007 09:47am

THE US military is experiencing a "suicide epidemic" with veterans killing
themselves at the rate of 120 a week, according to an investigation by US
television network CBS.

At least 6256 US veterans committed suicide in 2005 - an average of 17 a day -
the network reported, with veterans overall more than twice as likely to take
their own lives as the rest of the general population.

While the suicide rate among the general population was 8.9 per 100,000, the
level among veterans was between 18.7 and 20.8 per 100,000.

That figure rose to 22.9 to 31.9 suicides per 100,000 among veterans aged 20
to 24 - almost four times the non-veteran average for the age group.

"Those numbers clearly show an epidemic of mental health problems,'' CBS
quoted veterans' rights advocate Paul Sullivan as saying.

CBS quoted the father of a 23-year-old soldier who shot himself in 2005 as
saying the military did not want the true scale of the problem to be known.

Fun with statistics.
Is 120 per week a new number?
Is it different from what it has been in the past?
Is it out of line with the suicide rate of non-veterans?

120 suicides per week = 6,240 per year
Suicides per year in the US = 29,000-30,000.
That would mean vets make up about 21%% of the suicide deaths.
The US Population is 301,139,847 (as of July 2007).
Vets make up about 8%% of the population.
There are 24,128,000 military veterans in the US.
Of them, 1,695,000 are women (0.007%%)
Men commit suicide more often than women (by 4:1)

It is in line with the rate of suicides for non-vets. It is the same number
it has been under past presidents as well. It's the same number as that of
"peace time" vets.

It seems you've been suckered into the media's love of playing games with
statistics to make something appear a significant event.

Yup.

Look at the numbers.

The overall suicide rate includes both men and women. The US population is
nearly half male, half female, with females leading by a small margin.

Among that population, men comit suicide at a rate 4 times more often than
women. (or, for every woman who kills herself, 4 men will kill themselves).

Vets are almost entirely men - with a miniscule portion (as measured by
percentage), being female.

In the US;
88.6 suicides per day.
69.9 of them are men
24 of them are veterans
45 of them are not veterans

Men who are veterans don't kill themselves less often than men who are not
veterans.

You are manimpuolating the numbers in an unwarranted manner.

They are already adjusted for population and reported in equivalent units.

They are valid epidemiological reporting by experienced porfessionals.

Your numbers are garbage.

Actually, what I did initially was to put up just the raw numbers. The point
was that the original article was manipulating number to misrepresent
reality.

Yup. If and when it happens, I expect the media to report it.
