A federal jury in Chicago awarded $4.2 million Thursday to a West Side
couple whose infant was taken into protective custody for more than 8
months after two Chicago detectives allegedly "lied" to state
investigators, the couple's attorney said.
The city denied that the two officers had acted improperly and argued
that their actions played no role in the decision by the Department of
Children and Family Services to place the 6-month-old girl in foster
care, according to a Law Department spokeswoman. She said the city is
disappointed with the verdict and reviewing its legal options.
On Nov. 15, 2005, the owner of an in-home day-care center called Jose L.
Duran and his wife, Evelyn Torres, to report that their 6-month-old
daughter was crying uncontrollably, according to the couple's 2006
lawsuit. Hospital X-rays revealed their firstborn child had two broken
arms, according to the complaint.

WAYNESBORO — A former Child Protective Services worker for Shenandoah
Valley Social Services had her sentencing on drug charges delayed
Thursday morning in Waynesboro General District Court.

Authorities arrested Cherrianne Long, 32, of Grottoes on June 26, 2007,
after she was spotted in the 200 block of Port Republic Road, an area
known for drug trafficking. Police said an unidentified man was sitting
in Long’s 1983 BMW. As police questioned the man, Long exited a nearby
building and approached the car. The man and Long gave authorities
differing versions for being in the area, according to Waynesboro police.
After noticing a bulge in Long’s pants pocket, police searched her and
found oxycodone and methadone. Long was charged with two counts of
possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.
The Virginia Department of Forensic Science said 47 tablets of oxycodone
and six tablets of methadone were seized. Waynesboro prosecutor Charles
Ajemian said Long was trading drugs for drugs when caught.

G-8 climate scorecard shows US in last
By PATRICK McGROARTY,

BERLIN (AP) - The U.S. has done the least among the world's eight
largest economies to address global warming, a study released Thursday
found.
The G-8 Climate Scorecards 2008, released Thursday ahead of next
week's gathering of the Group of Eight on the northern Japanese island
of Hokkaido, also found that none of the eight countries are making
improvements large enough to prevent temperature increases that
scientists think would cause catastrophic climate changes.
The gathering includes the heads of states of the U.S., Japan,
Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Russia.
Regine Guenther, director of the World Wildlife Fund Climate Change
Program in Germany, told reporters in the German capital that G-8
leaders should commit to reducing emissions in their countries 40
percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrat Barack Obama on Wednesday was showcasing
his plans to encourage Americans to serve at home and abroad to
address issues such as education and climate change if he is elected
president.
Obama's plan, which would include doubling the size of the Peace
Corps, is part of an overall agenda to press Americans into service to
show "the world the best of our nation," according a statement from
his campaign. He announced the plan in December, several months before
he wrapped up his party's nomination.
The Democrat has spent recent days speaking out on issues that would
foster a middle-of-the road political persona to counter Republican
attempts to label him as too liberal. McCain, meanwhile, has sought to
highlight his perceived strengths — long experience in military and
national security matters.
Obama has focused this week root ideals of American citizenship —
patriotism and service to others — in advance of U.S. Independence Day
on Friday. On Monday he defended his own patriotism and a day later
promised to engage grass roots religious groups with federal money if
they tackle the country's social ills.

Hot future shock: Heat wave temperatures to soar
By SETH BORENSTEIN,
AP
Posted: 2008-07-02 16:09:44
WASHINGTON (AP) - During the European heat wave of 2003 that killed
tens of thousands, the temperature in parts of France hit 104 degrees.
Nearly 15,000 people died in that country alone. During the Chicago
heat wave of 1995, the mercury spiked at 106 and about 600 people
died.
In a few decades, people will look back at those heat waves "and we
will laugh," said Andreas Sterl, author of a new study. "We will find
(those temperatures) lovely and cool."
Sterl's computer model shows that by the end of the century, high
temperatures for once-in-a-generation heat waves will rise twice as
fast as everyday average temperatures. Chicago, for example, would
reach 115 degrees in such an event by 2100. Paris heat waves could
near 109 with Lyon coming closer to 114.

Dennis Haysbert (again) credits "24" with the Obama phenomenon
In January, Haysbert said, "I've paved the way for Obama." Now with
the primaries over, Haysbert says: "If anything, my portrayal of David
Palmer, I think, may have helped open the eyes of the American
people." "And I mean the American people from across the board — from
the poorest to the richest, every color and creed, every religious
base — to prove the possibility there could be an African-American
president, a female president, any type of president that puts the
people first," he said Tuesday.
