UN chief to G8: climate change, food crisis linked
By ARTHUR MAX,
AP
Posted: 2008-07-04 14:31:08
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - The global food crisis will only worsen
because of climate change, the U.N. climate chief said Friday, urging
leaders of the world's richest countries meeting in Japan next week to
set goals to reduce carbon emissions within the next dozen years.
Food security and soaring oil prices are likely to overtake climate
change in the priorities of the G-8 meeting starting Monday, though
global warming was the theme set by the host, Japanese Prime Minister
Yasuo Fukuda.
Food and global warming are interconnected, said Yvo de Boer,
executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate
Change. "They are not competing with each other on the international
agenda."
"It is absolutely right that the food issue is receiving a lot of
attention. That is a human crisis that's out there right now," De Boer
said in a telephone interview from his office in Bonn, Germany.

Attorney charged with possessing child pornography
http://lakeconews.com/content/view/4820/764/
Written by Elizabeth Larson
Friday, 04 July 2008
LAKE COUNTY – A former juvenile court attorney was in court Thursday to
plead not guilty to felony charges of possessing child pornography.
Robert Wayne Wiley, 74, of Lakeport was arrested last Sept. 20 on a
single felony charge of possessing child pornography, as Lake County
News has reported.
Following a lengthy investigation, Wiley is charged with a total of four
felony counts of possessing child pornography, according to Deputy
District Attorney Ed Borg.
Calls to Wiley's attorney, J. David Markham, were not returned Thursday.
Borg said Wiley was arraigned Thursday morning and pleaded not guilty to
the charges, which – if he's convicted of all of them and sentenced
consecutively – could carry a maximum of five years in prison.
Retired Fresno County Superior Court Judge Harry N. Papadakis has been
assigned to the case, said Borg, because all of the county's judges have
recused themselves from hearing the matter.

A gas used in the making of flat screen televisions, nitrogen
trifluoride (NF3), is being blamed for damaging the atmosphere and
accelerating global warming.
Almost half of the televisions sold around the globe so far this year
have been plasma or LCD TVs.
But this boom could be coming at a huge environmental cost.
The gas, widely used in the manufacture of flat screen TVs, is
estimated to be 17,000 times as powerful as carbon dioxide.
Ironically, NF3 is not covered by the Kyoto protocol as it was only
produced in tiny amounts when the treaty was signed in 1997.
Levels of this gas in the atmosphere have not been measured, but
scientists say it is a concern and are calling for it to be included
in any future emissions cutting agreement.
Professor Michael Prather from the University of California has
highlighted the issue in an article for the magazine New Scientist.
He has told ABC's The World Today program that output of the gas needs
to be measured.
"One of my titles for this paper was Going Below Kyoto's Radar. It's
the kind of gas that's made in huge amounts," he said.

A federal jury in Chicago awarded $4.2 million Thursday to a West Side
couple whose infant was taken into protective custody for more than 8
months after two Chicago detectives allegedly "lied" to state
investigators, the couple's attorney said.
The city denied that the two officers had acted improperly and argued
that their actions played no role in the decision by the Department of
Children and Family Services to place the 6-month-old girl in foster
care, according to a Law Department spokeswoman. She said the city is
disappointed with the verdict and reviewing its legal options.
On Nov. 15, 2005, the owner of an in-home day-care center called Jose L.
Duran and his wife, Evelyn Torres, to report that their 6-month-old
daughter was crying uncontrollably, according to the couple's 2006
lawsuit. Hospital X-rays revealed their firstborn child had two broken
arms, according to the complaint.

WAYNESBORO — A former Child Protective Services worker for Shenandoah
Valley Social Services had her sentencing on drug charges delayed
Thursday morning in Waynesboro General District Court.

Authorities arrested Cherrianne Long, 32, of Grottoes on June 26, 2007,
after she was spotted in the 200 block of Port Republic Road, an area
known for drug trafficking. Police said an unidentified man was sitting
in Long’s 1983 BMW. As police questioned the man, Long exited a nearby
building and approached the car. The man and Long gave authorities
differing versions for being in the area, according to Waynesboro police.
After noticing a bulge in Long’s pants pocket, police searched her and
found oxycodone and methadone. Long was charged with two counts of
possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.
The Virginia Department of Forensic Science said 47 tablets of oxycodone
and six tablets of methadone were seized. Waynesboro prosecutor Charles
Ajemian said Long was trading drugs for drugs when caught.

G-8 climate scorecard shows US in last
By PATRICK McGROARTY,

BERLIN (AP) - The U.S. has done the least among the world's eight
largest economies to address global warming, a study released Thursday
found.
The G-8 Climate Scorecards 2008, released Thursday ahead of next
week's gathering of the Group of Eight on the northern Japanese island
of Hokkaido, also found that none of the eight countries are making
improvements large enough to prevent temperature increases that
scientists think would cause catastrophic climate changes.
The gathering includes the heads of states of the U.S., Japan,
Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Russia.
Regine Guenther, director of the World Wildlife Fund Climate Change
Program in Germany, told reporters in the German capital that G-8
leaders should commit to reducing emissions in their countries 40
percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.
