Drug-addicted prisoners forced to go "cold turkey" received
compensation payments totalling £750,000 in the last year, according
to official figures.

The payments stem from a test case by six prisoners settled out of
court in November 2006 by the Home Office. They came after a High
Court judge approved damages after their claims the practice amounted
to an assault and breach of human rights.

Payments totalling £750,000 subsequently went to 197 prisoners forced
to stop taking drugs at jails across England and Wales under the
Opiate Dependent Prison Litigation.

Immigration has little if any long-term economic benefit to people
already in Britain, a new report is expected to conclude.

But the inquiry by the Lords economic affairs committee is also set to
warn that data on immigration is flawed. The main finding is
understood to be that it has a negligible economic impact.

That would undermine claims by ministers that migrants boost our
economy. Lord Turner, a government adviser who is on the committee,
had dismissed the idea that immigration could be justified on economic
grounds.

He accused people of using economic arguments to justify an influx of
immigrants and avoid a "racist backlash".
One peer said: "The more we looked at the flawed statistics, the more
we felt the Government is flying blind."
The headline figure used by Ministers against critics of the
unprecedented influx of foreign workers to the UK is that they boost
the economy by £6billion every year.

But the most in-depth study of its kind by a parliamentary committee
will conclude this is not the best measure of the policy's success or
failure.

Northern Rock is giving disgraced former chief executive Adam
Applegarth a £760,000 pay-off, a £346,000 pension top-up and
continuing to honour his cut-price staff mortgage.

Mr Applegarth, who was responsible for devising and implementing the
bank's disastrously flawed strategy, is being paid the golden goodbye
in 12 monthly instalments of £63,000, according to the annual report
published today.

Of course Zim can never recover economically to its former state,
because now potential outside investors KNOW how it's citizens are.

In the 60' & 70's the loony left could fool the public that S-S-africa

With global communications now, such lies are more difficult to
