Not to argue with you, but I seem to remember the old cobble stone
section as being there in the early 80's. I lived in Hackensack from
1980-1987, and used it pretty frequently. As I remember it, it was
cobblestone as you descended from the
elevated highway to the local streets.

In 1987 I moved to Fanwood, and did not use it after that. So I have
no idea what happened to it.

The last stretch of the (former elevated) West Side Highway
was the ramp assembly from (roughly) 55th to 58th, where it
broght you from street level to the upper portion.

(Everything south of there had long since been removed)

various parts of that remained cobblestone until the
entire kit and kaboodle was completely torn down
and rebuilt into the current mix.

No, but they were to be extended to other places:
The J Robinson Pkwy was to continue down Pennsylvania Avenue to the
Belt (Shore) Parkway.

There were floating plans to send the Prospect Expressway down Ocean
Parkway to Coney Island. Then the NYSDOT considered extending it down
Flatbush Avenue to the Rockaways. As everyone knows, both plans were
dropped.

Ocean Parkway is the Grand Concourse of Brooklyn
-- that was a
ridiculous suggestion.

But then everyone would soon forget who Major Deegan was. Everyone
already knows who DiMaggio (you know... "Mr. Coffee"...) so wouldn't it
be kind of unfair to Major Deegan to do that?

The rational was probaly that there was enough ROW along Ocean Parkway
so that would have reduced some community opposition, being...
