2007 TRB 86TH ANNUAL MEETING: INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES

The 2007 TRB 86th Annual Meeting will feature more than 50 international
sessions and meetings, with topics ranging from road safety in developing
countries to developing international standards for global-positioning
systems and intelligent transportation systems. International participants
at the 2007 TRB 86th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., are invited to the
International Participants Reception, Sunday, January 21, 2007, from 6:00
p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in the Hilton Washington HotelÂ’s International
Ballroom. The reception is sponsored by the TRB International Activities
Committee. The TRB 86th Annual Meeting Announcement includes meeting
registration, hotel reservation, workshop, special event, and general
scheduling information for the January 21-25, 2007, meeting in Washington,
D.C. Attendees are encouraged to review hotel reservation information in
the Annual Meeting Announcement and to make hotel reservations as soon as

The 2007 TRB Annual Meeting will close with a very timely and important
workshop scheduled for Thursday, January 25, 2007, from 8:00 am to noon in
the Georgetown West room of the Hilton Hotel. “Building the 21st Century
Workforce Workshop” will address the expected shortfall in qualified
workers--a critical concern for transportation organizations. The workshop
will explore trends, strategies, and practical workforce innovation in the
private, academic, and public sectors. Participants will address strategic
plans and next steps to enhance the transportation workforce through
breakout discussions on organization (core business focus, outsourcing);
recruitment (attracting long- and short-term workers, training, career
ladder); retention (deferred retirement, knowledge management, rehiring of
retired workers, succession planning, career ladders, cross training); and
diversity (traditional, generational, other). The workshop is open to
anyone who is registered for the Annual Meeting. Advanced sign-up for the

For more than 85 years, TRB's core mission has been to facilitate the
exchange of research results and other information among transportation
professionals. On June 12, 2002, TRB inaugurated its Transportation
Research E-Newsletter as a new tool to help fulfill this mission. The E-
Newsletter is designed to spread the word about TRB meetings, reports, and
other activities in a timelier, more accessible way than ever before.
ThereÂ’s a lot to report on. More than 5,000 engineers, scientists, and
other transportation researchers and practitioners volunteer their time and
talent to serve on TRB committees, panels, and task forces. Their work –
organizing conferences, overseeing research, and conducting studies – is
supported by state transportation departments, federal agencies including
the component administrations of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and

The Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) is soliciting ideas on
candidate topics for the FY 2007 Synthesis Program. The Synthesis Program
reports on current practices in specific subject areas, and is designed to

found to be the most successful in resolving specific problems. This
solicitation contains information on how to submit a topic for
consideration and provides a list of all previously authorized synthesis

Results Digest 308: Changes to the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design
Guide Software Through Version 0.900, July 2006, summarizes numerous
changes made to the original Version 0.7 of the Mechanistic-Empirical
Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) software. Specifically, the digest describes
the corrections incorporated in Version 0.8 (released in November 2005) and
the mainly technical improvements and enhancements included in Version
0.900 (released in July 2006).

The National AcademiesÂ’ National Research Council, in cooperation with the
Russian Academy of Sciences, has released the proceedings of the third
United States-Russian interacademy workshop in January 2005 on the general
theme of countering terrorism. The report focuses on many dimensions of
urban terrorism including the integration of response activities of
different government organizations should a terrorist attack occur. The
report includes presentations by a number of specialists who have
operational responsibilities for countering terrorism. TRB is a division
of the National Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences,
National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National
Research Council.

examines the purposes for and extent to which eminent domain can be and has
been used; the process states and select localities across the country use
to acquire land, including by eminent domain; and how the use of eminent

the use of eminent domain from June 2005 through July 2006.

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released the latest issue of
its Successes in Stewardship monthly newsletter that highlights current

GHG EMISSIONS INVENTORIES UPDATED WITH LATEST (2004) EPA AND EIA DATA

The Center for Climate Change and Environmental Forecasting, an initiative
of the U.S. Department of Transportation, has updated its greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions inventories to include 2004 data from the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of EnergyÂ’s
Energy Information Administration (EIA). The federal government tracks
gases that the United States releases into the atmosphere in emission
inventories. According to the Center, transportation activities accounted
for more than a quarter of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2004.
VALIDATION AND CALIBRATION OF A FATIGUE ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR RAILROAD WORK

explores a method to validate and calibrate a fatigue model. The report
examines 30-day work histories of locomotive crews prior to 400 human
factors accidents and 1,000 nonhuman factors accidents.

The Florida Department of Transportation has released a report that
examines the role of crossing locations and light conditions in pedestrian
injury severity. The report also includes a set of proposed guidelines for
marking midblock crosswalks at uncontrolled locations along FloridaÂ’s state

The European CommissionÂ’s Eurostat has released a report that
explores “stocks and flows” of graduates with a degree in science,
mathematics, and computing as well as in engineering, manufacturing, and
construction. According to the report, in 2005, 29%% of the European Union's
55 million tertiary graduates between 25 and 64 years old had a degree in
science, mathematics, and computing or in engineering, manufacturing, and
construction. The report also provides information broken down by gender,
age, and occupations.

The U.S. National Governors Association (NGA) has released a brief that
examines communications needs and strategies to improve public safety. The
brief is designed to help guide governors in their efforts to improve
wireless interoperability—the ability of public safety agencies to share
information using radio communication systems to exchange voice and/or data
on demand in real time, when needed and as authorized. According to the
NGA, the guide will provide governors with the tools they need to enhance
emergency communications in their states and across the nation.

explores the potential benefits of mixed-income transit-oriented
developments and the challenges to seizing the mixed-income transit-

promotes the development of more livable and sustainable communities.

examines parking lots near transit in nine communities in the Chicago
region and compares typical costs to support the parking lots as they are
today with revenue that could be generated from the redevelopment of some

more livable and sustainable communities.

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is a division of the National
Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy
of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council. The
mission of TRB is to promote innovation and progress in transportation
through research. In an objective and interdisciplinary setting, the Board
facilitates the sharing of information on transportation practice and
policy by researchers and practitioners; stimulates research and offers
research management services that promote technical excellence; provides
expert advice on transportation policy and programs; and disseminates
research results broadly and encourages their implementation.
