I grew up on the north shore of LI, in Glen Cove, which was and is under
one of the JFK approaches. It's not common to see planes overhead.
About 15 years ago, my dad started tossing layers of insulation in the
attic, and putting in new windows (Anderson). Since then, jet noise
hasn't been much of an issue - you just don't notice it indoors. The
local Lilco plant dumping steam, yeah, we hear that :)
BTW, only the 707 and early DC-8s were turbojet (maybe a few 720s, too).
The 727 is a turbofan, though the JT-8D had no real bypass ratio. The
later DC-8s, 707s, etc had JT-4Ds,which were fans also.
The Concorde was louder than them all by the end of its days, but then,
it was a nicer plane to watch so we didn't mind :)
(Still miss seeing it land and take off)
