Thundering dung! The taking of a natural resource means less freedom
for any one else who wanted to use it. This is true even if all uses
are mutually exclusive. Homestead is a scheme where by a royal line
of possession starts and then continues. The confusion is that at
the initial time of appropriation there is no one else being
excluded. But that condition gets falsely extended on down through
time. So that all those later that have their freedom compromised
have no recourse but to bow to the winners of the temporal lottary.
Homestead is an attack on freedom, and is in no way fair.
Fair would mean that the system would pass the vail of ignorance.
Homestead does not pass this test, as without ignorance I would merely
select to "take" the resource a nano second ahead of the next guy.
Letting assignment fall to the free-market means that best use will
have the resource and all those whose freedom is then compromised can
enjoy the maximum price for their loss.
"Let all keep what the make, and pay for what they take" is a lot more
fair then "let the first guy take it forever, with no compensation to
those then constrained."
Homestead is theft
