I have a British 303 Lithgow sniper rifle, the Austrailian government
confiscated it from a competition shooter before WWll, (I believe that
took all the competition shooters rifles, times were tough.) It went
through the war and then the Korean War. A guy who didn't know what
he had sold it to me dirt cheap. It's good up to 1200 yards with a 4X
scope, but I keep trying to find one that was issued with them. I
can't find one anywhere in the damn world. They hold compititions all
over the world for that one rifle, iron sights only. I really am only
good out to about 400 yards, I get lucky every once in a while at 800,
but it's luck I think, or no wind. But I am good at 400 yards. The .
460 was made because they found if you were big game hunting, like a
grizzly and you surprise each other in the brush (and it does happen),
the .50 cal pistol wouldn't knock them down. the fps is to slow, I
think was the reason. The .460 knocks them down and you don't become
bearman II. I saw a video of a shot with a 385 grain slug hit a bull
elephant the forehead. It went down like it had a heart attack, and
it's forehead looked like someone had taken a sledgehammer and taken a
great big swing to it. So, my family bought me one as a Christmas
present (It had been a hard year). It is fun, but not a gun you
practice with a lot. For everyday carry, I wouldn't trade my Glock 30
(.45) in for any gun in the world, not even another Glock. It fits my
hand perfectly, and it's like, I look at it, and hit it. It's
something hard to describe. My son is a competion shooter for Glock.
He uses a 9mm and it sick. You can be having a little trouble, and
he'll say, "Let me see if something is loose on." Then he fires it,
hands it back to you and says, "Oh, sorry, I knocked out your X."
Then he laughs like hell and tells you what you are doing with your
hands to straighten you out. He is an instuctor as well. After he
pulled that on me twice I told him to go to hell, I'll figure it out
myself.
But you are absolutely right about the .45. There is nothing better.
Because of the CCL laws and how you dress I sometimes have to carry a .
32 Beretta Tomcat that I really like, or a North American 5 shot,
single action .22 Magnum. Have you ever tried that? I love it, it is
unbelievable what it will do. It is tiny, but it sounds like a .44
magnum going off, and is very accurate, but you do have to practice a
bit on it, as it seems each fixed sight is a little different on
each. But, you can put it wherever you want up to 20 ft without a
problem and sometimes that's enough. But I still agree with you on
the .45, nothing better. I don't think a .45 will ever be outmoded.
They have tried everything else and still most people who can shoot a
pistol prefer the .45. Even my son, for everyday carry, carries a
Glock 30 (.45) as well. You can't go wrong. Regards, Ken
