Some, because they will kill without remorse. Some because they have
enough problems trying to come to grips with this life, let alone past
lives, and some because they are frightened of what they may see if
they look.
Of course there are some who fit the first catagory because they
'believe' they will ,as a reward, sit at the feel of Allah.Imagine how
much more destructive they would be if they had *first hand* knowledge
of being reborn?
No need to imagine. It doesnt happen.
The second catagory consists of the vast majority. Regardless of their
achievements, wealth and general status in life, they still feel
anxious. Many have been motivated by fear of not achieveing, fear of
failure (or success), of death of themselves or loved ones, or of
developing degenerative diseases. They see how quickly effects of
success dissipate, and leave a hunger, often worse that prior to the
success.
Generally, aspects of not being seen to fit societies expectations of
what it is to be successfull.

Just like you can try to find something in life, and only once you've
stopped trying to find it, will it be found.

Or perhaps we don't have past lives.
Just a suggestion. Hell, we don't even
know if we really have a current life. We
could be Brains in a Vat or a butterfly's
dream. All this certainty about the
unknowable just makes me cringe.
