War the greatest evil ?

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and
degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that
nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for
which he is willing to fight...is a miserable creature and has no
chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of
better men than himself. -- John Stuart Mill

And word gets out of a revolt in al-Qaeda.
Seems low level Iraqi recruits don't have the stomach for some of al-
Qaeda's tactics.
For instance, to control a neighborhood, al-Qaeda will do things like
cut the faces
off citizens with piano wire...or boil children to death in big pots
in front of their families.
This to keep people in line you see.

Of course "tactics" like this can't be compared to the outrage !! of
having a West Virginia
girl pointing at one's genitalia as happened at Abu Ghraib...OH NO !!
Now THAT was inhumane !

If some of what we consider "human" has evolved from tribal warfare,
what should we do about these instinctual but trainable neural
structures?

That would describe draftdodgers like Bush and Cheney to a T.

War has been said to be 'hell on earth'. But contemplation of war led me to
realize an even more defining 'hell on earth'.

Consider Espirit de corp. I remember in high school while playing football
[American] that the 'espirit de corp' was high and allowed players to
sustain a high degree of pain while still playing. Broken collar bones,
sprained ankles, blisters so deep one could almost touch bone, all sorts of
aliments and pain...all simply part of the game that players absorbed. Our
spirits were high so we 'ignored' such small pains.

Good point. And the weapons of war have changed, which also affect the
'espirit d'corps'. The brave heart, strong right arm, sword in
hand,... no longer cuts it. Now, even women can wage war. They dont
need personal bravery to launch a missile. Or destroy the
infrastructure which supports a people, and thereby starve them out.

And manipulate the media so that nobody looks at it, much less thinks
about it. The *problem* the alpha male have, who have always run wars,
is that they also instinctively struggle for dominance and setup un-
necessarily steep pyramidal power structures that become rich target
zones. The smart women tend to setup peer-to-peer networks that
disperse power across the landscape so that there is no center of
power to hit. Nor leader to assassinate in order to change policy.

Your quote contradicts the feeble thread of the rest of your post.
Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.
My ancestors did not fight in two world wars and struggled for the
vote to support patriotism.
