university degrees

after all these years, in a final semester class my lecturer finally admits
that the degree is just a piece of paper and that every other person has one
these days.
i am not the one who commercialised education and devalued the degree, but
if the past four years have been just a series of 'appreciation' modules and
students w/o A levels can now enter uni, it raises the question of why did i
even bother to take school seriously. should have just played football and
hang out at shopping malls all day. anyone who thinks allowing such
polytechnic students to enter, is unfair for those who worked hard to get
this far, is labelled as elitist. prior to graduation i ponder over what it
was all worth...

Schools are largely factories for pumping out worker bees. Here's a
good read on the subject:

Socialization takes precedence over everything else.

This is why women are now the majority at universities.

In science, engineering and other fields that require math there are
less women because, to a certain extent, thinking is inherently a
little anti-social, almost an act of violence.

Summers never said women were dumber than men. He said the standard
deviation of intelligence in women is less than that in men. (Saying
all women are the same is even worse as far as trying to keep from
getting your face slapped.) More really bright men and more who are
really rightarded and more women who are average.

Some smart alecky mathematician calculated a great woman mathematician
would appear only once every 160 years.

Recently Texas banned a math book on the basis it encouraged critical
thinking.

A math prof who keeps up on that kind of stuff said the book wasn't
the best text but that doesn't change the fact that critical thinking
is openly frowned upon in Texas.

I came up with a "put-down" years back....
"In more cases than I care to mention, the Ph.D. stands for
Penis-Head Degree
That's your run-of the-mill Dick-head with a Piece of Paper to prove
it."

It is a cliche that good education is priceless, not necessarily
quantifiable nor seemingly practical vocationally.

Yeah, I do buy the cliche: I luv the university, though an education
institution has its inherent contradictions and limits: And what
doesn't?

One's life, one's reason to be, one's mind, and "changing one's
reality" are what "good education" is ideally
about--imho of course.

Yes, it's also a time- waste throwing bags of water out of dorm
windows, getting drunk, and remembering endless
theories, concepts, b.s. et cetera.

So, I'm not trying to sell education nor anything, because as a
"subjectivist," I am not able to evaluate the worthiness of
the "curriculum" & campus experiences of anybody.

As somebody writes, the stuff learned (via a library or especially)
on
the internet can seem "more valuable" than ..uh..
studying, studying, studying four torturous years
