HATE LAWS' REAL AGENDA

By Harmony Grant
8 Apr 08

In the UK, 7000 citizens signed their name to a petition to expand
hate crime laws. They want the laws to punish anyone who commits
violence because someone looks different. The petition responds to the
murder of a young Goth-dressing woman and her boyfriend in a park.

The assailants didn’t know the girl. Presumably they attacked her
because she was wearing black lipstick. That’s how the argument goes.
The thuggish kids who attacked her should get tripled penalties
because their violence was motivated by her weird looks.

So, it would have been less heinous had she been an upper class,
pearls-wearing babe attacked because she looked rich? What if she’d
been a gorgeous blonde cheerleader and they attacked her because they
weren’t getting any? The list goes on forever.

First I hate cross posters.

That being said, I have always argued that we represent ourselves by the
objects we associate with. Once again, I use Picasso and his successful use
of certain, otherwise seeming non-aligned, objects to convey concrete
emotional context. For example, nails, broken glass, barbed wire...things
sharp...all come together to evoke things like fear and anxiety in the
beholder.

Someone presenting themselves with the Goth look are not 'non-aligned' and
innocent, but conveying a definite political communication designed just as
the original post suggests, as essentially anti-establishment, which in the
western world is, again essentially, anti-Christian [by way of values].

Of course, we in the west, hold free expression as something to protect.
But like the freedom of religion going to 'ludicrously' protect Satanic
worshipers, we should realize that there are limits to freedom before we
sacrifice the very goose that laid the golden eggs to begin with. There
are some things we should stand up and fight for and not against...and
freedom is not the ultimate value but remains still, a function of a higher
virtue we should protect even beyond.

"The Real Agenda Behind Hate Laws" is power. State Power.

Goths, jews, homosexuals, christians are emotional buttons that blind and
are beside and in service to this point.

Objects are objects and so neutral. Objects are assigned meaning and
purpose by the viewer and the user. The meaning of any object can be
different between any two people. To get 'meta' about it, there will
always be a difference.

So, we do not represent ourselves with objects, the representation is the
meaning placed on the objects. Even inside of cultural consensus we must
start here. Certainly in alt.philosophy we do.
