Teleology and emergent complexity

Author: M Winther
Date: Nov 6, 2007 23:35

Physicist Paul Davies discusses teleology and purposeful design
through emergent complexity in an essay in a book entitled: In Whom We
Live and Move and Have Our Being - Panentheistic Reflections on God's
Presence in a Scientific World: Eds. Clayton and Peacocke, (William B
Eerdmans, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 2004). Davies argues that the
"general trend of matter-mind-culture is written into the laws of
nature at a fundamental level." So he even includes culture, which
implies that he gravitates toward an archetypal understanding of
teleological processes. In this essay he coins the term "teleology
without teleology".

He discusses a model of "uniform divine action" and says that "Laws
are chosen because of the inherent self-organising and
self-complexifying properties they confer to matter." In this
"teleological" model, "there is room for human freedom, and room for
inanimate systems to explore unforseen pathways into the future."

Oh great! Among the intelligence-inhabited planets we're riding the Short
Bus into the future.
