I tried googling for a quote but I didn't find anything. I have no idea who
said it and I've never heard it before. But, if I were to guess, I would
think that the person meant someone would either be successFUL (that is,
successful in some career) or a philosopher (in this case, "philosopher"
would actually be a caricature who complains about his lot in life but never
works hard enough to be successful at anything)
