This sounds like a cartoon I saw on the wall in the physics
department back in 1974 or so...

1) White square with befuddled-looking person on it. "The
inhabitants of the paper square have no conception of the
true nature of their universe."

2) Square bisected by a diagonal line with person
triumphantly pointing to the diagnoal. "The triangle is
discovered. It is thought to be the ultimate building block
of the paper universe."

3) Square quartered by two diagonal lines. "The triangle
is split into a hemitriangle and a demitriangle. These are
thought to be the ultimate building blocks of the paper
universe."

... several iterations.

n-1) The hemidemisemitriangle is hypothesized. It is thought
to be the ultimate building block of the universe. The
following year, the hemidemisemitriangle is split.

n) Black square with befuddled-looking person on it. "The
inhabitants of the paper square have no conception of the
true nature of their universe."
