On that basis, the word isnt powerful, but like many words, is an
expression of intent, which can extreme.

You illustrate my point by providing a variety of interpretations.

It is a 'word of convenience' , the over use, like antibiotics,
diminishes the effect.

To 'not mean it', requires a contextual understanding.

Then it would be contradictory to be sorry someone has developed
Altzheimers. Extreme example based on a speculation the this is why
such diseases occur, but if it was true, it would be silly to be sorry
that someone else has eliminated their need to be sorry.

Ever been in an audience, at a Beethoven concert, and looked around at
the faces, when the 'Pastoral' is being played.
I would lable sympathy as reaction (second hand response and therefor
'not what it seems') and empathy an 'internal response' that can be
sgared but not communicated in the normal sense.

One can be empathetic to anothers circumstance, without it being
recipricated. Reciprication is not a requirement.

The more empathetic one becomes, the more one recognises the other
persons situation. Example would be giving councelling to someone who
is in the middle of a 'domestic'. They make it very clear the time is
not right.

In fact, the greater the empathy, the less the power. Like the concert
example, there is no need to use the power of argument to the
initiated.

Many uses for many levels of consciousness.
