If humans behaved correctly - there would be no such thing as Religion.

IOW, religion is just a way to get to God. They do not replace him.

So science is basically or mainly not about understanding the
universe, but about improving it?

As a result of the laws of karma. We fell pain and discomfort, believing it
was caused by "outside influences".
Pain is the greatest motivator to find out what is really going on.
Religions flair up when pain dominates a culture.
