Hi. What book or books would you recommend on philosophy as a whole? I
mean a kind of textbook, a survey, an introduction. I just don't know a

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy
Read everything at least once (and then as many times as you can take)
There is a very appropos bibliography there too
Philosophy is not for the enjoyment of reading (for me), though it's
of maximal importance to have formal knowledge of which the WIKI
article attempts to cover, and you are smart for asking as you are
apparently starting-out
"Political" Philosophies
For "enjoyments," Ayn Rand, George Orwell, Eric F. Goldman ( the cases
of FDR's left liberalism and of LBJ's tragedy), etal

Some blurb claimed if your library just has one book, _The Republic_
by Plato should be that book.

You might also pursue various writings on :
1. "Neurophilosophy" The "Churchill" books are outstanding.
2. "Neurotheology"

Supposedly _The Republic_ is recommended if you want a one book
library. Basically Socrates attacks of all the decadent hypocrisy in
ancient Athens.
Later Heller did the same in _Picture This_.

Oh please. Basically in _The Republic_ Plato
equivocates on the definition of the word "justice"
to make apologies for a Spartan, 1984-with-a-
happy-face, State. Everyone prefers the earlier
dialogues.
