i once dreamt of a circle of sufi men
the kiraathane stank of flavored tobaccos
sweat
sandalwood
smoky and lively with animated talk
dervishes spun around the circle
unintrusive
dreamlike distant and separated

they were talking about war
and reasons
and the benevolence of the one god of all religions
and they spoke a rough and eastern turkish
which i could only sometimes discern
one young kid
repeatedly startled by the eloquent descriptions of his elders
kept asking "why?"
"why?"
as if the forms of human murder
were a source of perpetual surprise
the circle
animated
would elucidate and illuminate
each in their limited way
and stutter and pause
as they searched each for furthur astonishments
one elder would fill in at these pauses
"intikam!" he would snarl
retribution
vengeance
retaliation
"intikam." he would say
shaking his head or making a fist or such
and i could feel the rhythm of the room
and the rhythm of the wars
waves of dervish twistings
splashed across these waves of vengeance
afront at past wrongs
to justify the wrongs of tomorrow
i could feel the coldness in the heart
the burden these men bore
facing intikam with the weight of their monovalent aims
it was a sad dream
because it made me see a monster in the mirror
retribution and revenge
justice and karma
causes only justifying effects
perpetuating wars
living
feeding off hate
..
and if there is a never day when the accounting ceases...
if there is never a day when the past is absolved...
carrying threat into the future...
i awoke and dressed defensively
a mexican dress
heavy and bright
i had no gods that morning
not even the ones i regularly hid from myself
not even the black flag i glanced at twice
