What are good philosophical novels or books other than the obvious
like Plato's Republic? What have you been reading recently?

The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy books are amusing:
"Time affords us the ability to blame past errors on others while whole
heartedly pronouncing our future successes."
"on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent
than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars
and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the
water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always
believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the
same reasons."
""What's up?" [asked Ford.]
"I don't know," said Marvin, "I've never been there."

Cool! As much as "magic" is so emotionally moving and amazing powerful
the nitty gritty of the situation is that the nuts and bolts are the
bits of the brain that help us to survive. Brilliant minds have moved
us forward in leaps and bounds with pure reason and will continue to
do so.

I must admit to liking the mystical magic ones too like Philip K.
Dick's and Frank Herbert's. Mybad.
