Naipaul is naive (or was naive 50 years ago) to suppose
Oxbridge education was relevant to career training for the
professional writer. At that date half the admired writers in
Britain had no univ-level education (half the admired people
in Britain had no univ-level education) and plenty of authors
recommended instead getting a job where you have to write
to specifications and on time. --But this is precisely what
is taught (to non-scientists) by the Oxbridge tutorial/essay method.
Every week you have to produce one essay on a topic you know
little or not at all that will engage the interest of someone who
knows a lot about the topic.
