French high court rules that Amazon.com cannot offer free shipping.
I kid you not.
http://www.nytimes.com/idg/IDG_002570DE00740E18002573AF005B04A4.html
As is the case with most anti-trust suits in the US, the action was
not - of course - brought by customers. It was brought by whiny
competitors, in this case the French Booksellers' Union which accused
Amazon of the dastardly act of offering discounts on books and even -
horrors - of selling some books below cost.
These decisions help explain why the French economy has been stagnant
and their GDP per capita is about equivalent to Louisiana.
But the French people themselves may finally have had enough. Amazon
is refusing to comply with the court order and has started a petition
drive garnering over 100,000 signatures so far. Perhaps as the French
people refused to support the most recent attempt by union thugs to
once again paralyze the economy with a nationwide strike, they will
also start fighting back against medieval/guild-like regulations which
have the same effect.

eerrmm you need, as usual, to check your facts - quoting Atlas Shrugged or
non-talking talking savages won't do.

My reference to "savvy French socialists" is of course a send-up
Tiggy's exact words - although of course since his reference was
intended to praise "the socialists", Tim had no objection.

Of course. Thank you, Michael. GDP per capita by country - plus many
other interesting statistics - are readily available at the "CIA Fact
Book" website. GDP by state is available at the Bureau of Economic
Analysis (BEA) website. I mention this only in the event that
occasionally socialists may wish to get their facts straight.

Of course I'm correct. Remember, Tim, I'm an Objectivist so I have
reality on my side, whereas you don't.

That those savvy French socialists can take pride in doing better than
Mississippi?
Somehow I think that the great socialists of the past had hopes for
something better than that.
Maybe you can explain why it hasn't happened?
>Who are the thugs paralyzing America?
Isn't it more relevant in this context to ask why France is paralyzed?
To ask why it can't do any better than some of the poorer states in
the US?
Btw, GDP per capita in Sweden - that oft vaunted welfare state
paradise - isn't much better than France.

Right, and that reality includes talking non-talking savages? Your reality
is fundamentalism--you're pretty stupid if you think naming yourself
Objectivist is anything other than naming; you could call yourselves
Shit-For-Brains and nothing would change. You have a very muddled view of
what philosophy is if you are truly an Objectivist. But I've noticed that
you avoid the posts here that deal with Objectivism. Surely a white flag,
and surely the true sign of a fundy: "Thou shalt not question". No surprise
though, Rand herself threatened to sue an academic philosopher for daring to
criticize her fundamentalism. If you can't beat 'em sue 'em.
