Matrix Think

"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit
the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within
that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views.
That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while
all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by
the limits put on the range of the debate. "

Marvelous. And from a mind as constricted as his. Ah well, Socrates
said sometimes its the fool with the right answer.

Do you suppose this smart man was proscribing this smart think?

There would of course be the short and long term view of smart.
Perhaps 'smart' here, means 'the cheapest', the most efficient, the
easiest, or the most habitual thing to do.

Now i wonder what he [fore]saw as limits? When was this quote
taken?

For example:
thinking that you're "white" or "black".
thinking that you're "american" or "iranian"
thinking that you're "male" or "female"
thinking that you're "higher" or "lower"

i imagine that the tools (like language) we employ actually create the
borders. so in some sense the bordering is inescapable.
