They know better than you think they do. As it played out, the 2004
election showed me that the people were *way* ahead of the
pros. That election was set about July.

They, as always, showed an interest in self-interest. As they saw it.

Politics used to be *ward* politics. Boss Tweed et al acted as
clearinghouses for information from the grass roots. TR made it all
abstract and shining-armor, as an electoral gambit. It worked.

Life does not happen on clean stainless steel. Life is compromise,
and that's what ward politicians did. We used to didn't start with
some Platonic solid, then try to fill it.

Statecraft is the art of filling the gaps between readily available
facts. Is that dishonest? There clearly cannot be enough facts to cover
everything. It's a rather small distortion from that to lies, and
when you put 'em in the boiling-pot to compete.... you get what
we have.

I think the path to Reality from Abstraction always involves
a parcel of gritty things. There is always a price.
