Machines having foot pedals similar to exercise bicycles are somewhat
more efficient (and easier on knee joints). Power outputs can run up
to 200 watts if the person is strong enough. One could run a clothes
washer or a laptop computer while pedaling, which would be some very
small reduction in their energy useage. Far more realistic and
practical would be for more people to start using windmills :)
