It's the people, not the religion/dogma/teachings

Here I am, at the halfway point of my life. I was raised roman
catholic, but no longer worship. I hated it - hated going to church,
such a chore. Hated the rules and learning about it. But my dad
brought me up right, instilled confidence in me and taught me how to
treat others. I hated school. I was picked on unmercifully right up
through high school. I had a lot of anger through my twenties because
of this.

Now as I look back, it wasn't the school that really was the problem.
It wasn't the catholic teachings either. It was the people. The kids
that picked on me.

I beleive this is the same with religion. Just like anything else in
life. Nothing man-made is inherently evil. It's the person that makes
it that way.

Lots of christians and religious people keep their religion to
themselves, and believe for whatever reason they believe. Even if they
raise their kids that way, they, like my father, aren't trying to hurt
their kids, just trying to raise them the best they think they know
how. Many religious people donate/volunteer their time to help others
throughout the world.
