I Was Going To Vote For .... But

I really like these blogs or interviews where someone says:

"Obama saved my firstborn by donating a kidney and he paid off my
mortagage and I really love the guy and he's right about every issue
but I'm gonna to vote for McCain because of what that minister Wright
said about 911" (Or fill in whatever latest "because of".)

They mostly come from people who claim to be independent, or
Republicans. I mean this scam in general is usually aimed at
Democrats, and not just in this election. (Except when it is Hillary
or Obama supporters saying that they will switch parties and vote for
someone with whom they completely disagree on all issues because their
feelings are hurt.)

Anyway it is hard to figure whether people can really be deluding
themselves to such an extent that they believe what they are saying.
It isn't like other areas where they buy into some talk-radio
boilerplat
---the cognitive dissonance seems to me like it should be
insurmountable.

I always find this humorous. How is it that supporters of a political
candidate can say with a straight face that it is always the
supporters of the opposing candidate that cannot be trusted?
