That's really terrible, a naive user would most likely use those. How
many bits did you have to discard before the number became "random"?

I don't recall. I think discarding the lower three bits would have been
enough, but I shifted by eight bits to be on the safe side, and
(possibly) to make it easier on the computer hardware.
I did "man rand" just now and am pleased to see that that bug does not
exist on my SUSE Linux system (either that, or they stopped documenting
it, which would be *really* stupid). The system with the bug was Linux,
I don't know what flavor, from about 1998.
