I am making the transition to winter. It will be snowing soon and
out come the skiboards, snowboards, XC skis, snowtube and snowshoes.
I've been enjoying healthy soups and stews and taking saunas this time
of year. The air is crisp and clean with no annoying bugs. I like to
sit in my backyard making a fire in our stone fire pit relaxing as I
watch the logs turn into glowing coals and the sparks shoot upwards
into the dark sky. One equation for finding happiness states, that to
be happy we need someone to love, someone to love us, something to do
and something to look forward to. Sustainable, healthy and positive
activities fit the bill when it comes to having something to do and
something to look forward to. In the past, all I had to occupy me was
my addictions. How many addicts turn to their...

Plato had a similar view but it was rather authoritarian. I like alot
of exercise because it helps keep strength in many more ways than one.
On Plato
We must begin by "sending out into the country all the inhabitants of
the city who are more than ten years old, and by taking possession of
the children, who will thus be protected from the habits of their...

I'm making the transition to summer, sitting here typing in my shorts and
t-shirt.

I'm glad you enjoy the winter. I find it a difficult time of year to get
excercise. It doesn't usually snow here (South East England, near London)
and even if it did I live a long way from any ski slopes, even if I were so
inclined! I enjoy cycling and walking, and neither are much fun in the cold
and wet, or indeed in the dark, when the daylight hours are so short. This
year in England, it rained nearly all through the Summer, and despite
England's reputation, that IS unusual. Consequently I didn't get enough
excercise in the Summer either, and am now about a stone (14 lbs)
overweight.
I do agree with the comments about excercise being important for both
physical and mental health.
Tim.

However, who wants to do winter sports when you can watch it on T.V.
in front of the fireplace with a cup of cocoa and a blanket? Or, you
can peruse the internet and look at *ahem* nice pictures...
The sedentary lifestyle -- spending all day at a desk, then all
evening at the T.V. or the computer -- seduces us into laziness and
physical inertness. If we could turn even a bit of that inert
(potential) energy into movement, it would have great benefits, not
just as occupation, but as a means of improving health overall, which,
according to science, includes the brain. From the second link,
"Physical activity is related to better cognitive health and effective
functioning across the lifespan." From the fourth: "Research shows
that many of the changes attributed to aging are actually caused in
large part by disuse."
