HYPOCRISY ABOUT HYPOCRISY

The Right and Left mutually accuse each other of
hypocrisy, these days.

The Right accuses Al Gore of hypocrisy because his
personal lifestyle is supposedly not energy-efficient,
enough.

The Left accuses Senator Larry Craig of hypocrisy
because he maintains consistent anti-gay public positions
while indulging in furtive gay sex.

"Hypocrisy" - what is it, really? There seems to
be a lot of confusion. Maybe not so much a real confusion,
perhaps, as a kind of recursion- a hypocrisy about hypocrisy.

Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby maintained that
Larry Craig was not a "hypocrite" because he was merely
being "weak", while being quite sincere in his anti-gay
positions.
