He was working towards it by radically improving oil
refining technology, which enabled him to rapidly and
repeatedly cut the price of petrol. His "monopoly"
diminished once it was no longer possible to so rapidly
improve petrol refining, and no longer possible to so
rapidly reduce the price of petrol.
